Swiss Migros launches the Coffee B coffee ball system—can compostable capsules replace traditional coffee capsules?
Coffee has become a mainstream daily beverage, and instant and capsule coffee occupy an important place among derivative categories thanks to their convenience. Companies such as Nestlé have driven the popularity of capsule coffee machines, and capsule coffee has grown rapidly worldwide. But the disposable metal and plastic shells have created a huge amount of waste. In response to this pain point, Swiss retailer Migros launched a new capsule coffee system, Coffee B, in Zurich on September 6, replacing traditional capsules with brown coffee balls. The outer layer uses a colorless and tasteless algae-based film, which can be composted after use and fully degrades within a few weeks. The accompanying coffee machine will first go on sale in Switzerland and France, and enter Germany in 2023. Algae packaging has also appeared in recent years in scenarios such as edible water bags, offering a new idea for reducing plastic in coffee packaging. [more…]
USTC Develops Edible Coconut Jelly Straw to Replace Paper Straws, Doubling Strength and Fully Degrading in 60 Days
In recent years, with the advancement of plastic restriction policies, plastic straws have gradually exited the food service scene, replaced by paper straws and PLA straws. How Does Filter Cone Material Affect Coffee Extraction? Analyzing Brewing Differences Through Thermal Conductivity and Specific Heat Capacity
Coffee filter cups on the market come in a wide variety of materials—resin, glass, ceramic, and metal each have their own fans—but what real impact do different materials actually have on brewing? Many people's first thought is the price difference, but setting aside cost, the most core difference between materials lies in their ability to control temperature. Thermal conductivity determines how quickly heat is transferred, while specific heat capacity relates to how much heat an object can store. Together, these two physical parameters directly change the temperature performance of hot water during the extraction process. Metal conducts heat fastest but also dissipates it quickly; ceramic has a high specific heat capacity but needs thorough preheating; glass performs mildly; and resin, because it absorbs heat slowly, has almost no effect on water temperature. In this article, Front Street Coffee will break down the characteristics of four common filter cup materials one by one, and combine them with the actual differences in flow rate among V60 versions made of different materials, to help everyone understand why you cannot simply copy extraction formulas from the internet, but should instead flexibly adjust your brewing strategy according to the material of the filter cup in your hands. Luckin's forced destruction of co-branded materials sparks debate: Is it a waste of expired packaging or an inevitable move for IP compliance?
Recently, a Luckin Coffee employee posted footage on social media showing a store destroying co-branded packaging overnight, with trash bins full of unopened cup sleeves and takeaway cups, quickly sparking discussions among netizens about waste and environmental protection. According to the employee, on the eve of the end of each co-branding campaign, stores must cut and destroy remaining materials under surveillance, including previously co-branded Chengdu Cultural Tourism small panda keychains. Some netizens compared this with Cotti Coffee's approach, arguing that continuing to use expired packaging materials both reduces waste and gives customers surprises; others with knowledge of the matter pointed out that the destruction may be forced by the licensing period granted by the co-branding partner, and using them beyond the period could lead to breach-of-contract compensation. Behind this controversy lies the dilemma of materials management and intellectual property compliance amid the co-branding boom. [more…]
Tea Baidao employees are burying their heads in memorizing endorsement materials, yet when fans try to verify, they're brushed off with a uniform script. What exactly is this maneuver trying to guard against?
Cramming before an exam is a scene you might not expect to see in a milk tea shop. Recently, netizens captured a ChaPanda employee hunched over a stack of color-printed materials at the counter, muttering to themselves and occasionally looking up to memorize things silently. Upon investigation, it turned out this was tied to ChaPanda's soon-to-be-officially-announced global premium brand ambassador, Cheng Yi. It's not unusual for a brand to have employees familiarize themselves with ambassador information in advance, but at the same time, they strictly prohibit any early leaks. Material control is so tight that stores must send back photos of unopened watermarked materials every night, and violating stores even face financial penalties and contract termination. Many interpret this as having learned from the disastrous Gu Ming x Love and Deepspace collaboration. However, some consumers believe that rather than spending so much effort memorizing materials, it would be better to thoroughly study the recipes and techniques—after all, drink quality is the foundation of repeat business. Cotti Coffee store staff destroying Wang Yibo endorsement materials sparks controversy; brand issues public apology and terminates cooperation with the store involved
Recently, a video of a Cotti Coffee employee destroying a standee of former spokesperson Wang Yibo sparked a huge uproar on social media. In the video, the store clerk deliberately cut up the standee's face and posted it with a caption, provoking widespread discontent and a boycott among fans. As the incident continued to escalate, Cotti issued a public statement of apology on February 28, announcing the termination of cooperation with the store involved and its closure, while promising to strengthen training and oversight of the material recycling process. This controversy has brought the issue of material handling standards after the termination of brand endorsement contracts to the forefront, and has once again drawn industry attention to the protection of artists' portrait rights. How do the material differences between ceramic and resin drippers affect the extraction results of pour-over coffee?
The material of a pour-over coffee dripper isn't just about feel and aesthetics—it genuinely changes the flavor in the cup. Front Street Coffee has shared before that the reason different dripper materials produce different extraction results comes down to two physical indicators: specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity. Thermal conductivity determines how quickly heat transfers, while specific heat capacity determines how easily a substance heats up or cools down. Together, they determine how much temperature a dripper "steals" from the hot water. This article will start from these two concepts to explain why a ceramic dripper makes coffee less bitter when it hasn't been preheated, why it's best to warm a ceramic dripper with hot water before use, and offer parameter adjustment suggestions based on actual brewing. [more…]

Nayuki's square takeaway cups go viral on social platforms; after upgraded store material controls, requesting them via note no longer works
The "Daily 500 Fruits & Vegetables" series recently promoted by Nayuki has sparked heated discussion on social platforms, but unexpectedly, what really catches the eye is not the flavor of the drinks, but the square packaging cups specially designed by the brand for this series. This cup, with its square shape, PP5 material, and white sealed lid, quickly became popular because of its combination of good looks and practicality, and at one point there was even a situation where "the cup is more popular than the product." Many consumers noted in their orders that they wanted the square cup, and store employees were once happy to oblige. However, as demand surged, the brand headquarters began to standardize material supply. Now, if you want a square cup, you can only pay extra through the official mini-program to upgrade the cup type. The once-circulated "note request for a free square cup" hack has completely stopped working. This article sorts out the ins and outs behind this phenomenon and explores how brands can balance material control with consumer expectations. [more…]
